Dodecanese MP of New Democracy, Manos Konsolas, emphasized the need for meaningful dialogue, strategic planning, and supportive development policies regarding Greece’s new Tourism Spatial Planning framework.
In his public statement, Konsolas described the proposed tourism spatial plan as “a basis for dialogue,” stressing that the government has committed to considering additional observations and proposals submitted during the consultation process in order to ensure a balance between environmental sustainability and economic development.
Konsolas, who was responsible for shaping New Democracy’s tourism programme in 2019, noted that the spatial framework should not simply consist of horizontal regulations, but should also include integrated development policies, financing tools, and targeted support programmes for the tourism sector.
Referring specifically to destinations such as Rhodes and Kos, he warned that restricting large-scale investments could lead to the fragmentation of projects into smaller developments, potentially causing even greater pressure on natural resources and the environment.
He also highlighted that the concept of carrying capacity should not be limited to the number of tourist beds, but must also address issues such as water scarcity, energy demands, coastal erosion, and environmental protection.
Furthermore, Konsolas reiterated his long-standing support for upgrading small accommodations, rental rooms, and 2- and 3-star hotels, while calling for concrete financial tools and development programmes to support the tourism industry’s transition into a new era.
Concluding his remarks, he stressed that the future of tourism requires “dialogue, proposals, and connected government policies for the next day of tourism.”
