Public Announcement regarding Precautions due to Strong Local Storms
FORECAST FOR TOMORROW, SATURDAY 20-04-2024
WARNINGS
Showers and locally strong thunderstorms in central and northern mainland Greece and the northern and eastern Aegean Sea. The phenomena will be particularly intense until midday, posing greater risk in the following areas: Eastern Thessaly, Sporades (mainly Skiathos and Skopelos), Southern Pieria, Northern Evia, Fthiotida regional unit (in the north), islands of the eastern Aegean Sea (especially Chios and Lesbos).
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
Cloudiness with showers and thunderstorms is predicted in the eastern region. The phenomena will be intense until midday in central and eastern Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, Sporades, islands of the eastern Aegean Sea, the Dodecanese, and locally in Evia. Gradually, the weather will improve in most areas.
Winds will blow north-northeast at 6 to 7 Beaufort scale in the northern Aegean Sea, occasionally reaching 8 Beaufort scale, with slight weakening by midday. In other areas, winds will blow west-northwesterly at 5 to 7 Beaufort scale, locally reaching 8 Beaufort scale in the seas, with weakening in the afternoon.
Temperatures will slightly drop in the eastern region, reaching 18 to 20 degrees Celsius in the Ionian and mainland areas, and 17 to 19 degrees Celsius in the island regions.
EASTERN AEGEAN ISLANDS – DODECANESE
Weather: Cloudiness with showers and sporadic thunderstorms. The phenomena will be locally intense until midday, with possible hailstorms.
Winds: Initially, winds will blow from the south at 5 to 7 Beaufort scale, turning northwesterly by the afternoon, maintaining the same intensity and gradually weakening.
Temperature: Ranging from 14 to 19 degrees Celsius.
Consequently:
a) Owners and captains of small vessels are advised to take all necessary safety measures and refrain from sailing during the validity of the special bulletin.
b) Winter swimmers are advised to avoid sea bathing.
c) Sailing and fishing clubs are requested to inform their members and avoid activities during the validity of the special bulletin.
d) Towing vessel associations and volunteer organizations are requested to be prepared to provide assistance in case of incidents at sea.
e) Marine agents are requested to inform the captains of the vessels they represent.
