Program for the Celebration of the National Resistance against Nazism and Fascism
May 9th, the day of the end of the Second World War, was established by Article 4 paragraph 1 of Law 2703/1999 as the day of nationwide celebration of the National Resistance 1941-1944 against Nazism and Fascism, to honor the fighters, the participants, the deceased, and the victims of the struggle of the Greek People against enemy occupation forces.
For the celebration of the day, the following events will take place on the island of Kalymnos:
- General flag-raising from 8:00 in the morning until sunset on May 9th, 2024.
- 09:30: Doxology at the Metropolitan Church of Christ the Saviour. His Eminence the Metropolitan of Kalymnos, Leros, and Astypalea, Mr. Paisios, will preside, accompanied by the Clergy. Troops from “DELVINAKI” 5/42 Infantry Regiment will render honors and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Kalymnos will perform.
- 10:00: Memorial service at the Heroes Monument in the Central Square. The Festive Speech of the day will be delivered by retired Educator, Mr. Yamaïos Panagiotis.
- Wreath-laying by the Mayor, Prefect, Commander of the 5/42 Infantry Regiment “DELVINAKI,” and the President of the Municipal Council. Honors during the wreath-laying will be rendered by representatives of the Army and the Municipal Philharmonic Orchestra of Kalymnos.
- The lighting of all Public, Municipalities, Public Utility, and Banking Institution premises from the sunset of May 9th, 2023, until the early hours of the next day.
The following are invited to attend the official doxology and other events of the program: The People of Kalymnos, His Eminence Metropolitan Mr. Paisios, Members of Parliament of the Dodecanese, the Regional Governor of the Southern Aegean, the Mayor of Kalymnos, the Commander of the 5/42 Infantry Regiment “DELVINAKI,” the President of the Municipal Council, Regional Councilors, Municipal Councilors, the Magistrate, former Members of Parliament, former and current Mayors, the Director of the TEI of Kalymnos, the Chief of Kalymnos Police Department, the Port Authority Chief, the Director of the AEN, the Airport Manager, the Chief of the Fire Department, Presidents of Municipal Enterprises, the President of the Municipal Port Fund, Heads of Public Services, Heads of Public Utility and Banking Institutions, Officers of the Armed Forces, Security Forces, Port Police, and Fire Department, both active and retired, Representatives of Political Parties, the representative of the E.A.A.N., the representative of the PEAEA, the representative of the PS PESMA, the representative of the Association of Reserve Officers of the Regional Unit of Kalymnos, the Scout and Guide Superintendents, Presidents of Chambers of Commerce, Scientific, Professional, and Labor Organizations, the representative of the local branch of EES, Presidents of Cultural Associations and Clubs, and representatives of the Media.
The Master of Ceremonies for the events is Mr. Diakomichalis Vasilios, a municipal employee. The Assistant Master of Ceremonies is Mr. Kappas Georgios retired.
The Holy Metropolis is requested to oversee the ecclesiastical ceremony, with responsibility falling to Mr. Kappas Georgios.
For maintaining order outside the Church, the Kalymnos Port Authority is requested to take care.
Honors are requested to be rendered by the 5/42 Infantry Regiment “DELVINAKI” and the Municipal Philharmonic of Kalymnos.
