Michalis Kapiris Resigns, Michalis Sergis Takes His Seat
Michalis Kapiris has resigned from his position as Regional Councillor, handing over his seat to fellow candidate Michalis Sergis in the Naxos Regional Unit.
The two candidates received an equal number of votes in the 2023 local elections, while the transition comes exactly halfway through the current local government term.
In a statement issued in Rhodes on July 16, 2026, Nikiforos Papanikolas, leader of the regional political group “New Era in the South Aegean,” expressed his gratitude to the outgoing councillor for his contribution to the group and the islands of the South Aegean.
Papanikolas noted that Kapiris was elected the leading Regional Councillor in the particularly demanding Naxos Regional Unit at the age of just 27, earning the trust of his fellow citizens.
He described Kapiris as an exceptional young professional of strong character, seriousness and mature political judgement, emphasizing that he served the regional group and the islands with consistency, responsibility and integrity.
“I sincerely thank him for our cooperation and wish him every success in the next stage of his journey, which I am certain will be equally creative and promising,” Papanikolas stated.
At the same time, he welcomed Michalis Sergis to the Regional Council, describing him as another highly capable member of the group, equipped with knowledge, experience and a genuine willingness to work for the islands and their people.
Papanikolas wished the new Regional Councillor strength and a productive term, expressing confidence that his diligence, knowledge and dedication would make a substantial contribution to their shared efforts for the South Aegean.
