“Nisos Kalymnos”: 200 Days in Piraeus
Municipal councillors and ANEK shareholders Dimitris Diakomichalis and Pantelis Zoidis are demanding immediate answers over the prolonged stay of the ferry “Nisos Kalymnos” in Piraeus, as well as information about the vessel’s mechanical condition before it departed Kalymnos for its five-year maintenance programme.
In a letter dated 19 August 2026 and addressed to Kalymnos Mayor Ioannis Mastrokoukos, ANEK President Dimitris Maragkos and Vice-President Michail Lelekis, the two councillors state that more than 200 days have passed since the vessel left for Piraeus. They claim that no clear information has been provided about when it will return to Kalymnos and resume service.
According to their letter, a search through MarineTraffic showed that, as of the evening of 18 August, the vessel remained moored at the same location in Drapetsona.
Engine-room and bridge logbooks requested
The letter also contains serious claims concerning the condition of the ship’s engines and engine room before its departure for Piraeus. The two signatories allege that during one of its final sailings to Astypalaia in December 2025, the “Nisos Kalymnos” was left without propulsion or control for 55 minutes.
They are therefore requesting immediate access to copies of the vessel’s engine-room and bridge logbooks covering the relevant period. They warn that unless the documents are provided promptly, they intend to refer the matter to the Public Prosecutor.
Diakomichalis and Zoidis are also renewing their request for ANEK’s situation to be discussed urgently by the Kalymnos Municipal Council. They want the vessel’s captain, engineer and crew members serving at the time to be invited to provide information about the alleged incident and the reasons behind the lengthy repair delay.
Questions raised over the “Kalydna”
The two councillors also raise questions about progress on the “Kalydna”, stating that €500,000 was made available approximately 18 months ago but that, according to them, the project has yet to be completed.
The allegations and questions contained in the letter are attributed solely to its two signatories. The document does not include a response from the municipal administration or ANEK’s management.
