Kalymnos and Tarpon Springs Strengthen Their Bonds
The Deputy Mayor of Tarpon Springs, Panagiotis Koulias, who is of Kalymnian descent, was welcomed to Kalymnos Town Hall by Mayor Ioannis Mastrokoukos at noon on Monday, July 20, 2026.
The meeting took place in a warm and cordial atmosphere, with the primary aim of further strengthening relations between the two sister cities, which share deep historical, cultural and family ties.
The two officials exchanged gifts and good wishes, while also discussing and sharing information about the administration and day-to-day operation of their respective municipalities. Their talks focused on opportunities for closer cooperation between Kalymnos and Tarpon Springs, as well as maintaining strong ties with the large Kalymnian community in Florida. Mr. Koullias also extended an invitation to Mr. Mastrokoukos to visit Tarpon Springs in the near future.
Also present at the meeting were Deputy Mayor for Expatriate Kalymnians Kalliopi Koutouzi and Kalymnos Municipal Council President Dimitris Maragkos.
Koulias was accompanied by a group of relatives from the island and by his mother, Maria, a proud Kalymnian who returned to her homeland after many years. Her long-awaited return added a particularly emotional and personal dimension to the visit.
The meeting once again highlighted that the relationship between Kalymnos and Tarpon Springs extends far beyond their official sister-city status. It is a living bond sustained by people, families and a shared Kalymnian heritage.
