Thirty years after the Imia Crisis, journalist Alexis Papachelas presents on SKAI TV a revealing two-part documentary that revisits the military and diplomatic thriller which brought Greece and Turkey to the brink of armed conflict.
Through more than twenty interviews with key figures from Greece, Turkey and the United States, rare archival footage and previously unpublished material, the documentary accurately captures the tense atmosphere of the period and seeks answers to critical questions that remain unresolved.
Military commanders, diplomats, politicians, journalists and U.S. officials recount developments both on the ground and behind the scenes: from the origins of the crisis and the escalation around Imia, to the landing of Turkish commandos on the western islet, the crash of the Hellenic Navy helicopter, and the decisive role of U.S. mediation that led to the “no ships, no troops, no flags” agreement.
The documentary places the Imia Crisis and its lasting lessons for Greece’s strategic planning under close examination and airs on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 January at 21:00.
