A defining chapter of the Greek War of Independence will come alive on Kalymnos on Sunday, August 16, 2026, with an open-air re-enactment of the historic Battle of Gerontas.
The event is being held at the initiative of Manolis Mousellis, Head of the Kalymnos Regional Unit, and will begin at 8:00 p.m. in Pothia’s central square, outside the “Ai Mousai” Reading Room.
The Battle of Gerontas is remembered as one of the pivotal naval engagements of the Greek struggle for independence. The event aims to highlight its historical importance while helping preserve Greece’s collective memory and national heritage.
The keynote speaker will be Ioannis Kataravas, a retired Hellenic Navy officer, author and researcher of modern Greek history. He will present the historical background of the battle and explain its significance for the course of the 1821 Revolution.
The re-enactment is expected to offer residents and visitors a memorable historical spectacle, transporting the audience back to the era of Greece’s great naval campaigns.
The event is open to the public, with organisers inviting everyone to attend an evening dedicated to history, remembrance and Greece’s proud maritime tradition.
