According to the latest European Parliament Eurobarometer survey, global developments are intensifying feelings of concern among European Union citizens, with 52% saying they are pessimistic about the future of the world. The figure is slightly higher in Greece (56%) and Cyprus (58%).
A significant 66% of respondents (78% in Greece and 90% in Cyprus) believe that the EU should play a more active role in ensuring their security. At the same time, 89% across the EU say that Member States need to be more united, with support reaching 93% in Greece and 95% in Cyprus.
Furthermore, 73% agree that the EU needs more tools and resources to address current global challenges, with higher percentages recorded in Greece (82%) and Cyprus (86%).
At EU level, the largest group of citizens holds a positive image of the European Union (49%), while 17% express a negative view. In Greece, 34% have a positive perception of the EU, compared to 42% in Cyprus. Regarding the European Parliament, positive views outweigh negative ones, with 38% across the EU expressing a favorable opinion, compared to 20% holding a negative view. In Greece and Cyprus, 31% and 30% respectively maintain a positive image of the European Parliament.
“The citizens expect the European Union to protect them, to be prepared, and to act in unity. This is precisely what a stronger and more determined Europe is called upon to deliver. Europe is our strongest shield,” stated European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
