Europe Day marked yesterday, 9 May, commemorating the historic Schuman Declaration of 1950
Europe Day was marked yesterday, Saturday 9 May, commemorating the historic speech delivered in 1950 by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman, who presented a plan for closer cooperation among European states.
The Schuman Declaration is regarded as a cornerstone of European integration, as it proposed the pooling of coal and steel production, paving the way for the European Union as we know it today.
At a time of global challenges, Europe Day serves as a reminder of the importance of unity, peace, democracy, security and cooperation among European peoples. This year’s celebrations carried special significance, marking 40 years since Spain and Portugal joined the EU, as well as the 40th anniversary of the first official Europe Day celebrations and the public use of the EU flag and anthem.
