The SYRIZA-PS leader accused the government of tolerating profiteering, allowing fuel prices to soar and following a risky foreign policy line.
SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Socrates Famellos launched a strong attack on the government, blaming it for rising fuel prices, the ongoing cost-of-living crisis affecting households and businesses, and Greece’s stance in the current international conflict.
Socrates Famellos accused the Mitsotakis government of acting as a “predictable and unquestioning ally” of the United States and Israel, arguing that this approach puts Greece’s national interests and sovereign rights at risk.
He also criticized the government for refusing to convene a Council of Political Leaders, saying that a common national strategy is needed on major foreign policy issues. Famellos reiterated his party’s call for no Greek involvement in the war, urging that US bases in Greece should not be used for military operations and that Greece should not participate in missions in the Strait of Hormuz.
On the economic front, he focused on the ongoing inflation crisis, especially fuel prices, noting that unleaded petrol has risen above 2 euros per liter. He argued that the government’s measures fail to address the root of the problem, while accusing refineries of making excessive profits and the government of failing to properly regulate the market.
Famellos also announced four SYRIZA-PS amendments, including a reduction in fuel excise tax, a temporary suspension of VAT on food and medicine, a cap on refining profit margins, and price controls across the supply chain.
In closing, he called on the government to bring these proposals to a vote, arguing that Greece needs a different policy based on market oversight, tax relief and decisive action against profiteering.
