Calls for Broad Progressive Alliance
SYRIZA-PS President Socrates Fammelos delivered a strong message of unity during the party’s Central Committee meeting, arguing that Greece is facing a deep political and social crisis. He sharply criticized the Mitsotakis government over rising living costs, corruption scandals, social inequalities, and what he described as a weakening of democratic institutions.
A key focus of his speech was the need to rebuild and unite the broader progressive camp. Fammelos welcomed the creation of Alexis Tsipras’ new political initiative, the “Hellenic Left Alliance,” describing it as a positive development that could strengthen progressive forces and improve the prospects for political change in Greece. He urged SYRIZA members to stand “alongside, not against” the new project.
At the same time, he stressed that SYRIZA’s political identity and historical legacy would remain intact, while participating in a wider process of cooperation among progressive and democratic forces. Concluding his address, Fammelos called for unity over division, saying that citizens expect progressive parties to join forces in order to offer hope and an alternative path for the country’s future.
