G. Nikitiadis: A Holistic Approach to the Repatriation of Young People is Necessary
Statement during the joint session of the Committees on Hellenism in the Diaspora and Social Affairs
The need to develop a comprehensive national plan for the return of Greek scientists and young people who have emigrated abroad in recent years was emphasized by Dodecanese MP of PASOK and First Vice President of the Special Permanent Committee on Hellenism in the Diaspora, George Nikitiadis, during the joint session of the Committees on Hellenism in the Diaspora and Social Affairs, held on Wednesday, June 4.
Mr. Nikitiadis stressed that a holistic approach is required to address the repatriation of young scientists and researchers. He thoroughly analyzed the real conditions that led to the youth exodus, outlining the profile of these individuals based on their profession, age group, and values. At the same time, the PASOK MP highlighted the need for accurate data collection and statistical tracking regarding both migration and repatriation, calling for responsible documentation by the state.
As First Vice President of the Diaspora Hellenism Committee, he presented and analyzed a range of factors behind the departure of young scientists from Greece, as well as what changes they seek in order to consider returning.
Nikitiadis also referenced PASOK’s proposal, introduced by MP Apostolos Parastatidis, urging Greece to actively participate in European initiatives like “Choose Europe for Science”, which aim to attract highly skilled scientists currently leaving the United States.
As Nikitiadis noted, for the first time since World War II, there is a reverse brain drain from the U.S. to Europe. Due to policies pursued during the Trump administration, many scientists are now leaving America and seeking opportunities in Europe in fields such as biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and energy.
Finally, the Dodecanese MP stressed that the return of young people and scientists to Greece cannot rely solely on financial incentives. It also demands the genuine restoration of meritocracy, transparency, and trust in institutions, in order to make Greece an attractive destination for those seeking meaningful professional and personal prospects.
