A public statement backs DEYAR’s invitation to negotiate, citing undelivered infrastructure and the need to review the agreement’s terms.
A public statement has called for acceptance of an invitation by Rhodes’ Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company (DEYAR) to amend its cooperation agreement with the South Aegean Region and the Municipality of Rhodes concerning the operation and maintenance of water supply infrastructure linked to Gadouras Dam.
The statement presents negotiations as a way to resolve the prolonged dispute between the regional administration and DEYAR, arguing that the confrontation has harmed Rhodes and exhausted the local community.
According to the statement, DEYAR is seeking revised contractual terms on the grounds of incorrect pricing and substantial changes to the circumstances underpinning the 2022 agreement. Its request is linked to the reported failure to complete Phase II works and deliver the planned infrastructure.
The statement also maintains that the regional administration’s own report acknowledges approved reductions in the scope and price of the contractor’s agreement. It therefore questions why a corresponding review of the cooperation agreement with DEYAR should be ruled out.
It clarifies that opening negotiations would not mean automatically accepting DEYAR’s financial claims or applying the proposed changes retroactively. Instead, it calls for substantive talks, warning that outright rejection could fuel further disputes.
The statement’s central message is that pursuing an agreement is an act of institutional responsibility aimed at ending a damaging stalemate for Rhodes.
