A Painful and Overlooked Truth”: The Trauma of Gender-Based Violence from the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus
A delegation from the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) visited Cyprus to investigate the impact of the invasion’s trauma on women and girls. The delegation included Eleonora Meleti (EPP, Greece), Loucas Fourlas (EPP, Cyprus), Anna Maria Cisint (Patriots for Europe, Italy), Laurence Trochu (Conservatives, France), and was accompanied by Giorgos Georgiou (Left, Cyprus). The MEPs met with representatives of the Cypriot government, the House of Representatives, civil society, and female survivors to hear firsthand the experiences of women affected by the 1974 Turkish invasion.
The head of the delegation, Eleonora Meleti, stated:
“We are devastated. Our meetings in Cyprus confronted us with a painful and often ignored truth: the widespread gender-based violence, including rape and sexual torture, inflicted on women during and after the Turkish invasion of 1974.”
Ms. Meleti emphasized:
“We owe it to these women to tell the truth, to deliver justice, and to ensure that no girl or woman ever suffers in silence again.”
