Dodecanese MP and former Deputy Minister Giannis Pappas (New Democracy) addressed the Hellenic Parliament during the debate on the Ministry of Defense’s bill titled “Transition Map of the Armed Forces to the New Era.”
He described it as a strategically significant reform aimed at adapting Greece’s defense to evolving global and regional security threats. Pappas emphasized reforms, including a new salary structure, the upgrade of military schools, an active reserve model with 150,000 reservists, and strengthened national defense autonomy. He highlighted the vital role of deterrence, especially for frontline islands like Rhodes, Karpathos, and Kastellorizo.
Concluding, he urged MPs to support the bill, reaffirming that “peace is not the absence of threats, but the presence of deterrence,” and thanked the leadership of the Ministry of Defense for their dedication to national interest.
