Νuclear energy remains dangerous
As the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster approaches this Sunday, Greenpeace warns that the risks associated with nuclear energy remain unchanged. The explosion of reactor number four on April 26, 1986, caused one of the worst humanitarian and environmental disasters in history, affecting millions across Europe.
Experts estimate that around 115,000 people died from cancers linked to radioactive contamination, while hundreds of thousands suffered serious health conditions. Approximately 350,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes in Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus, and about five million still live in areas exposed to radiation today.
Radioactive contamination spread over roughly 150,000 square kilometers, with radioactive clouds reaching 14 European countries, including Greece, where elevated radiation levels were recorded following rainfall in northern regions and Thessaly.
Greenpeace stresses that the threat persists. The protective “sarcophagus” surrounding the damaged reactor remains a temporary structure, while reinforcement works have been halted due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Recent drone attacks have further increased the risk of structural failure, which could lead to renewed radioactive releases.
At the same time, the organization criticizes the renewed push for nuclear energy in Europe, arguing that it is being presented as a climate solution despite its risks and high costs. It also raises concerns over plans to explore small modular reactors in Greece, emphasizing that all nuclear technologies carry similar dangers.
Greenpeace highlights that nuclear energy is costly, creates long-term waste management challenges, and requires significant natural resources, while the risk of accidents remains ever-present—especially in times of geopolitical instability.
In conclusion, the organization calls on Greece and governments worldwide to prioritize renewable energy sources in order to ensure a sustainable and secure energy future.
