The Provincial Medical Association of Kalymnos, due to the prevailing high temperatures and in concern for the health of citizens, reminds everyone of the protection guidelines against the effects of the heatwave and urges the public to follow them.
High-Risk Groups
- Infants, children, and the elderly
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women
- People with chronic cardiovascular conditions, hypertension, diabetes, respiratory diseases, kidney diseases, liver conditions, mental illnesses, dementia, or severe neurological disorders
- People undergoing chronic pharmaceutical treatment
- Obese or overweight individuals
- People who:
- Work outdoors or in hot environments
- Exercise intensely/athletes
- Consume excessive alcohol or use drugs
- Suffer from acute illnesses such as infections with fever or gastroenteritis (diarrhea and/or vomiting)
- Work outdoors or in hot environments
Caring for the Elderly
Elderly people are at greater risk from heatwaves and their effects on the human body than other groups.
If you know elderly individuals, ensure:
- They do not remain alone during the heatwave
- They do not travel during the hottest hours of the day
General Protection Guidelines for Heatwave Days
DO
- Stay in air-conditioned spaces
- Keep windows closed during the hottest hours of the day and open them at night
- Take several showers during the day or, if not possible, place wet cloths on your head and neck
- Avoid unnecessary travel, especially during heatwaves or using public transport
- Schedule outdoor activities during cooler hours (early morning or late evening). If not possible, seek shade frequently
- Wear light, loose, and light-colored clothing
- Apply sunscreen (SPF 30+) at least 30 minutes before sun exposure
- Wear a hat with a wide brim and sunglasses when outdoors
- Choose meals that are light and frequent, avoiding fatty foods
- Consult a doctor if you have chronic illnesses or take medications that affect body temperature regulation
- Use fans and air conditioning when necessary
- Rest often and drink plenty of fluids
- Choose shaded areas and ventilated spaces whenever possible
AVOID
- Direct exposure to the sun. Stay in shaded and cool places, avoiding crowded areas
- Drinking coffee and alcohol
- Heavy physical labor, especially in hot and humid conditions
- Using ovens/stoves unnecessarily during hot days to avoid increasing indoor temperature
Caring for Babies and Children
- Dress them lightly and keep their hands and feet free
- Never leave them in the sun and always ensure they wear hats
- Alongside milk, offer additional fluids such as water (if appropriate)
- Encourage consumption of more fruits and vegetables and less fat
- Never leave children in a parked car, even with windows open
- Never leave pets in parked cars
- Always consult your pediatrician as needed
Special Attention to Vulnerable Groups
Ensure they:
- Have sufficient food for the heatwave period
- Are never left in a closed car
- Drink enough fluids
- Stay in cool/air-conditioned areas
- Ventilate their living spaces during the night
- Take the appropriate medication
- Are monitored for signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke and transported immediately to healthcare services if needed
