Preserving Sacred Heritage for Future Generations
KALYMNOS, Greece – Significant conservation and restoration works have been successfully completed at the Metropolitan Church of the Transfiguration of Christ the Savior in Pothia, Kalymnos, marking an important step in safeguarding one of the island’s most prominent religious and cultural landmarks.
The restoration focused on valuable ecclesiastical elements of historical, artistic, and liturgical significance, including the pulpit, the iconostasis, and the bishop’s throne. The intervention helps preserve the church’s aesthetic and spiritual character while protecting it from the effects of time and deterioration.
The project forms part of a broader program of improvements carried out in recent years at the Metropolitan Church, including maintenance and painting works aimed at enhancing a site that holds deep religious and cultural importance for the people of Kalymnos.
The successful completion of the project reflects the close cooperation between the South Aegean Region, the Kalymnos District Administration, the Holy Metropolis of Leros, Kalymnos and Astypalaia, and the competent services of the Ministry of Culture. Officials emphasized that protecting monuments of faith is both a duty to history and a legacy for future generations.
