International Women’s Day: The Threat of Cyberbullying
As part of the events for International Women’s Day, Jackie Fox, an iconic figure in the fight against cyberbullying, addressed the plenary session of Parliament. Jackie Fox recounted how her daughter, a healthy young woman who became the target of relentless physical and online abuse, tragically died by suicide.
Following her loss, Ms. Fox campaigned for the adoption in Ireland of “Coco’s Law” against cyberbullying. She called on the European Parliament to turn it into a European law in order to protect both children and adults from similar horrific cases of abuse.
Welcoming Ms. Fox, Roberta Metsola emphasized that “the courage of women who refuse to remain silent continues to shape our societies. The European Parliament will always stand by their side.”
In the discussion that followed, Members of the European Parliament stressed that bullying and hate have nothing to do with freedom of speech, but are forms of violence that must be stopped.
