Municipality of Kalymnos requests inclusion in summer ferry route connecting the Aegean with Northern Greece
Official letter sent to Attica Group and the Ministry of Shipping seeking direct connection with Thessaloniki.
The Municipality of Kalymnos has submitted an official request for the island’s inclusion in the summer ferry route connecting Aegean islands with ports in Northern Greece, through a letter addressed to Attica Group and the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy.
The letter, dated March 12, 2026, highlights the importance of strengthening Kalymnos’ ferry connectivity with Northern Greece, particularly during the summer season.
According to the municipality, Kalymnos is one of the most dynamically developing tourist destinations in the Dodecanese, internationally recognized for alternative tourism — especially rock climbing — and hosts thousands of visitors every year along with major events such as the Kalymnos Climbing Festival.
However, the absence of a direct ferry connection with Northern Greece currently limits visitor access and creates travel difficulties for residents of the island.
The municipality argues that including Kalymnos in the summer ferry route would:
- strengthen tourism flows from Northern Greece,
- improve island connectivity,
- facilitate travel for residents and professionals,
- boost local economic activity and trade,
- and enhance the viability of the route through increased passenger traffic.
The request was also communicated to the Regional Governor of South Aegean George Hatzimarkos and is signed by the Mayor of Kalymnos Ioannis Mastrokoukos, who calls for a positive response and the inclusion of Kalymnos in the summer ferry schedule.
