Mayor Pays Tribute to Katerina Kathopouli–Giannatou
Mayor of Kalymnos Ioannis Mastrokoukos has expressed his profound sorrow over the passing of Katerina Kathopouli–Giannatou, a distinguished Kalymnian whose life was dedicated to serving people, culture and her beloved homeland.
Katerina Kathopouli–Giannatou was a founding member and longtime President of the “Agios Nikolaos” Association of Kalymnians of Attica. With vision, dedication and selflessness, she worked tirelessly to preserve the bonds between Kalymnians living away from the island and their ancestral home, leaving a valuable legacy for future generations.
As a scientist, artist and woman of letters, she was also widely respected for her integrity, kindness and multifaceted contribution. Her work was recognised through several major distinctions, including an award from the Kalymnos Branch of the Lyceum Club of Greek Women and the Golden Cross of the Church in the Dodecanese, bestowed upon her by the Ecumenical Patriarch.
Her love for Kalymnos and culture is reflected even in her family’s final tribute. In lieu of funeral wreaths and flowers, those wishing to honour her memory may make a financial contribution to the Kalymnos Theatre Group, thereby supporting cultural creativity on the island she loved so deeply.
“Kalymnos is bidding farewell to one of its most important ambassadors—a woman who honoured her homeland in every possible way and earned the respect and affection of all who knew her,” the Mayor stated, adding that her memory and work would remain an enduring source of inspiration.
On behalf of the Municipality of Kalymnos and personally, Mayor Ioannis Mastrokoukos extended his heartfelt and sincere condolences to her daughters, Sofia and Savvina, her relatives and loved ones, and the entire Association of Kalymnians of Attica.
May her memory be eternal.
