With great satisfaction, the Municipality of Kalymnos announces the completion of the purchase of the historic “Apollon” cinema theatre, which now becomes municipal property and is set to be transformed into a modern Cultural Multipurpose Center.
Friday, August 22, 2025, marks a historic day for Kalymnos. The property was officially acquired through the signing of the contract by Mayor Ioannis Mastrokoukos and the children of the late Aggelis Maragkos: Petros (Professor of Robotics at NTUA), Angeliki, and Nomiki (both educators).
This development is a tangible demonstration of the Municipal Authority’s commitment to its promises. From the outset, Mayor Mastrokoukos had made it a top priority to find a permanent home for cultural activities on the island. Today, that vision becomes reality—opening new prospects for a thriving cultural future. Kalymnos now has a space worthy of its rich artistic identity and ready to meet the needs of a vibrant, modern community.
The former Apollon cinema, located in Patithries, has a total area of 467.09 m² and meets all technical and operational standards required to safely and fully accommodate a wide range of cultural events. Through the necessary renovations, it will be transformed into a welcoming and dynamic venue, open to all.
The space will host:
- Theater performances
- Film screenings
- Conferences
- Concerts
- Art exhibitions
- Educational programs
- And a variety of events—all under one roof
Mayor Ioannis Mastrokoukos stated:
“We made a promise to our fellow citizens and to the people of culture on this island: that they would finally have a home of their own. Today, we keep that promise. Acquiring the ‘Apollon’ cinema opens a new chapter for Kalymnos’ cultural scene. It will become a space where creativity, art, and collaboration can flourish.
I sincerely thank the family of the late Aggelis Maragkos for graciously responding to the Municipality’s request.”
The acquisition and transformation of Apollon marks the beginning of a new era for the cultural identity of Kalymnos and further strengthens the island’s role as a cultural hub in the Aegean.
With respect,
The Mayor of Kalymnos
Ioannis St. Mastrokoukos
