Kalymnos is mourning the passing of Ioannis Halikos, a distinguished benefactor whose name became synonymous with generosity, selfless contribution, and deep love for his homeland.
In honor of his memory, the Mayor of Kalymnos, Ioannis Mastrokoukos, announced a series of mourning measures. Municipal services and the municipality’s legal entities will remain closed on Friday, March 6, 2026, as a mark of respect.
A one-minute silence will also be observed during all sports and cultural activities scheduled on the island over the upcoming weekend. At the same time, local organizations are urged to suspend planned entertainment events as a sign of respect for the island’s mourning.
The Municipal Council of Kalymnos is expected to convene before the arrival of the late benefactor’s body on the island in order to decide on the official honors that will be paid in recognition of his significant contribution to Kalymnos.
