Kalymnos Municipal Council: The Decisions on the Budget, Telendos, Pedestrian Zones and Parking – All 15 Items in Detail
The Kalymnos Municipal Council met on Friday, August 7, 2026, to consider 15 items concerning the municipality’s finances, infrastructure projects, traffic arrangements, sports facilities and municipal property.
Key issues included amendments to the budgets of the Municipality and the Municipal Port Fund, the “GReco Islands” Local Action Plan for Telendos, operating regulations for municipal sports facilities, temporary pedestrian zones and parking arrangements in Pothia.
Several proposals were approved unanimously or by majority vote. Two items were postponed, one was withdrawn, while the proposed regulations for municipal sports facilities failed to secure the absolute majority required for approval.
The decisions in detail
1. Third amendment to the Municipality of Kalymnos budget
The Council approved the third amendment to the Municipality of Kalymnos budget for the 2026 financial year, with several councillors recording objections or reservations on individual sections.
Mr Galyouzis voted against the amendment. Mr Mavros supported the revenue provisions but opposed expenditure under certain budget codes. Mr Diakomichalis supported the inclusion of new projects while objecting to individual entries. Mr Choulis voted in favour of the revenue provisions but raised objections concerning studies and the remaining sections of the amendment.
2. Fourth amendment to the Municipal Port Fund budget
The fourth amendment to the budget of the Kalymnos Municipal Port Fund was approved.
Mr Mavros and Mr Galouzis voted against it, with Mr Galouzis citing an issue involving the Technical Chamber of Greece. Mr Diakomichalis abstained, while Mr Choulis recorded a “present” vote.
3. Extension of the Telendos paving project
The Council approved an extension to the completion deadline for the repair and maintenance of the paved surfaces on Telendos. Mr Galyouzis voted against the proposal.
4. Goran Joksimović named an honorary citizen
The Council unanimously approved the proclamation of Serbian educator and author Goran Joksimović as an honorary citizen of Kalymnos.
5. “GReco Islands” Local Action Plan for Telendos
The “GReco Islands” Local Action Plan for Telendos was approved.
Among those voting in favour were Mr Galouzis, Mr Mavros and Mr Diakomichalis. Mr Diakomichalis also made clear his opposition to the installation of wind turbines. Mr Choulis voted against the plan.
6. Sports facilities regulations not approved
The proposed operating regulations for the Municipality’s sports facilities were not approved because they failed to secure the required absolute majority.
Both votes in favour and against were recorded. Mr Mavros voted against the regulations, while Mr Mousellis recorded a “present” vote.
7. Municipal Archive proposal withdrawn
The proposal to establish a Municipal Archive in the municipality-owned property currently used as a parking area in the Kalamiotissa parish was withdrawn from consideration.
8. Municipal bequests
The issue concerning the legal status, use and management of municipal bequests was referred to the Municipal Committee.
The Council unanimously approved the decision on the expediency of proceeding with the necessary examination and action.
9. Signs for the Linaria and Rina Vathy pedestrian zones
A decision on installing movable metal signs for the temporary pedestrian zones in Linaria and Rina Vathy was postponed, pending further examination of matters related to the relevant publication in the Greek Government Gazette.
10. Access permits for pedestrianised areas
The Council also postponed its decision on the procedure for issuing access cards and permits to residents and employees in pedestrianised areas.
11. Parking area on Pothia’s main shopping street
The Council unanimously approved arrangements for a parking area on Pothia’s main commercial street, near the “AB Vassilopoulos” supermarket.
12. Disposal of materials from the central square fountain
The destruction and disposal of materials removed from the fountain in the central square was unanimously approved.
13. Compensation for members of municipal bodies
The Council unanimously approved an updated decision on the eligibility and compensation of Municipal Council and Municipal Committee members for attending official meetings.
14. Committee for Road Safety Code violation appeals
The Council approved, by majority vote, the establishment of a committee to examine objections and appeals relating to Road Safety Code violations recorded by the Municipal Police.
The committee includes Mr Theofilidis, a police representative, the Mayor and Mr Zoidis. Mr Mavros and Mr Galouzis voted against the proposal.
15. Mayor’s official travel
The Mayor’s travel outside Kalymnos for official municipal business was unanimously approved.
The meeting concluded with decisions affecting the Municipality’s financial planning, transport and parking arrangements, sports facilities and municipal property. Particular attention was drawn to the differing votes on the two budget amendments and the failure of the sports facilities regulations to secure the necessary majority.
