Kalymnos once again pays tribute to its rich maritime heritage with the reenactment of the Sponge Divers’ Departure, taking place on Saturday, August 9th, 2025.
The emotional ceremony revives the old tradition of sponge divers bidding farewell to their loved ones before embarking on their long and perilous journeys across the Aegean and Africa. With traditional costumes, chants, and folk music, the event transports attendees to another era.
Known as the island of sponge divers, Kalymnos proudly honors its seafaring legacy and the courage of its people.
