M. Konsolas Calls for Reform of Teacher Recruitment Scoring to Support Families and Large Households
Dodecanese MP of New Democracy, Manos Konsolas, has submitted a parliamentary intervention to the Minister of Education, calling for amendments to Law 4589/2019, which governs the criteria for appointing teachers.
Mr. Konsolas focuses on two key proposals: increasing the scoring points awarded for each dependent child and introducing a separate recruitment call specifically for candidates who are parents of large families.
He argues that the fiscal cost of these changes would be negligible, while the message of support for families and large-family educators would be strong and meaningful.
Under the current framework of Law 4589/2019, teacher recruitment scoring includes 1 point per month of teaching experience (up to 120 points), up to 120 points for academic qualifications, 40 points for persons with disabilities, 3 points per dependent child, 7 points for foreign language proficiency, and 4 points for certified computer skills.
The MP highlights that the current scoring for dependent children is low, while no additional provisions exist for large-family candidates. He also notes that it is inherently difficult for such candidates to accumulate high teaching experience, as substitute teachers are required to relocate frequently across different regions, placing a heavy burden on their families.
Mr. Konsolas further links the issue to Greece’s demographic challenge, stressing that supporting families and introducing meaningful incentives should be a policy priority, including institutional changes in the teacher recruitment system.
