Banks Embrace New Technologies: ATM Cash Withdrawals Now Contactless via Mobile Phones
Banks are adopting new technologies to simplify transactions, and access to cash from ATMs is undergoing a major transformation. Soon, bank account holders will be able to skip the use of plastic cards and make withdrawals easily using just their mobile phones.
A Gradual Transition with NFC-Enabled ATMs
This shift is happening gradually, as bank branches upgrade their existing ATMs to support NFC (Near Field Communication) or “contactless cash withdrawal” features. This new functionality allows users to withdraw money and check their balance through a simple mobile-based process.
Requirement: Add Your Card to a Digital Wallet
To take advantage of this feature, users must first add their bank card to a digital wallet on their smartphone—such as Apple Pay or Google Wallet. Once the card is digitized, the mobile device becomes a secure tool for withdrawing cash from compatible ATMs.
How It Works (As Easy as a Tap):
- Hold your smartphone near the ATM
- Authenticate with Face ID or fingerprint
- Choose the amount and complete the transaction
Look for the NFC Symbol – And the Benefits
Currently, three major banks in Greece—Eurobank, National Bank of Greece, and Piraeus Bank—have already begun offering this service through their upgraded ATMs.
To make them easier to identify, these ATMs display a special NFC/contactless symbol. This marks an important step in the digitalization of banking services, offering consumers greater speed, convenience, and safety.
Why Contactless Transactions Are Safer:
- No need to touch the keypad or insert a card
- Reduced risk of PIN theft or card skimming
- Secure authentication through your phone
This change is expected to enhance everyday banking and reflects a broader trend toward digital and contactless financial services.
