Screen the Documentary “Marseille, Distant Daughter” by Director Marc Gastine
On Saturday, August 16, 2025, the screening of the documentary “Marseille, Distant Daughter” by director Marc Gastine took place at the amphitheater of the 1st Nikiforeio Junior High School of Kalymnos. The event was co-organized by the Kalymnos Environmental Education Association (YDNA) and the 1st Nikiforeio Junior High School.
The film, which has received significant awards, explores with sensitivity and directness the experience of dual identity, shedding light on the personal stories of Greeks — including Kalymnians — who migrated to Marseille during the 20th century.
The film highlighted how one’s place of birth and place of residence often coexist in a continuous internal search. Local citizens, as well as many expatriate Kalymnians living in France, participated in the screening. They warmly embraced the initiative and deeply felt the emotional connection the film created through their shared experiences.
Director Marc Gastine also joined the event online and engaged in conversation with the audience about his work.
YDNA and the 1st Nikiforeio Junior High School of Kalymnos expressed their heartfelt thanks to the director, Mr. Marc Gastine, for his presence and meaningful contribution, and to literary critic Mr. Giorgos Choulis, who introduced the film. They also thanked all attendees, whose participation enriched the dialogue around memory, identity, and the value of cultural heritage.
Special thanks were extended to the event sponsors:
Ms. Niki Drossaki, Mr. Ioannis Trikilis, and Ms. Christina Koubra for their generous support of our efforts.
