ANEK and Landfill Debate Forces Recess at Kalymnos Municipal Council
KALYMNOS, June 9, 2026 – A heated exchange between members of the municipal administration and the opposition marked the Kalymnos Municipal Council meeting on June 9, as discussions surrounding ANEK and the island’s landfill escalated into a tense confrontation.
The debate intensified during questions and statements concerning the future of ANEK and waste management issues, with council members engaging in sharp verbal exchanges.
As tensions continued to rise, the President of the Municipal Council intervened and called for a ten-minute recess in order to restore calm and allow the meeting to proceed in a more constructive atmosphere.
Following the break, the session resumed normally. However, the incident underscored the significance of two issues that remain at the forefront of local public debate: the future of the municipal shipping company and the management of waste disposal on Kalymnos.
