Island Declared in State of Emergency – Restoration Process Underway After Severe Weather
The island has been officially declared in a State of Emergency following the extensive damage caused by the winter storm, primarily affecting coastal areas.
Significant damage was recorded in Emporios, Masouri, Myrties, Telendos, Vathy, Kantouni, Melitsachas, Linaria, Therma, Vlychadia and Pserimos, where strong waves and gale-force winds caused destruction to infrastructure, coastal networks and public spaces.
By decision of the Municipal Authority, a special committee was established and immediately proceeded with the recording of damages. The assessment process has now been completed, and a technical report is currently being drafted to determine the full extent of the destruction as well as the total restoration cost.
According to Mayor Ioannis Mastrokoukos, once the technical documentation is finalized, the municipality will begin the process of securing the necessary funding for the required restoration works.
The Municipality’s goal is to complete all necessary procedures by May 4, allowing restoration interventions to move forward without delay and ensuring the full recovery of the affected areas.
