The Mayor, Giannis Mastrokoukos, Participated in a Broad Meeting on Fire Prevention Readiness
Mayor Giannis Mastrokoukos took part with remarks in an extensive meeting chaired by the Minister of Climate Crisis, Giannis Kefalogiannis, the Regional Governor, Giorgos Hatzimarkos, the Ministry Coordinator, the General Director of Forests, officials from the Ministry of Environment, the region’s MPs, the leadership of the Fire Department, and representatives of Local Government. The topic of the meeting was the preparedness and coordination for the 2025 Fire Prevention Season.
All participants emphasized the importance of prevention and coordination between competent authorities and local governments, with the Mayor of Kalymnos stressing in his remarks that the delegation of responsibilities to municipalities for prevention must be accompanied by increased funding and staff hiring.
In addition, the Mayor highlighted to the Minister and officials the need to upgrade the Volunteer Fire Station and convert it into a Fire Department Outpost in Kalymnos. A professional outpost, operating under the Fire Service with trained firefighters, would be capable of immediate, professional, and effective response in all cases, while also utilizing trained volunteers.
Mayor Mastrokoukos also underlined the readiness of the municipality’s mechanisms and the Volunteer Fire Outpost, and stressed the importance of individual responsibility by residents, urging timely clearing of private lots so that everyone can enjoy a safe summer in beautiful Kalymnos, without endangering property or the environment.
