Our new site Kalymnos Times has contacted the Mayor of Tarpon Springs Panagiotis Koulias, who is of Kalymnian descent, about the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. He sent us the following statement.
“I am thankful to report our damages to the City were minimal and there were no casualties in Tarpon Springs. Milton brought a record-breaking wind and rain phenomena, but we were much more fortunate than our neighbors in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota. We have restored over 95% of power and electricity back to the City and its residents who lost it during Hurricane Milton. All power should be restored by the end of this week. Tarpon Springs is a strong, resilient community, and we have come together to recover from this storm quickly. Also, we as a community including Greek Orthodox and all Citizens of Tarpon Springs give thanks and prayers to St. Nicholas, and the Lord for looking out for the community once again. Your organization working with St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral is the best route to help everyone impacted by the Hurricanes. I appreciate your willingness to help the community…”
“I look forward to building and redeveloping the Sister Cities relationship we have between the City of Tarpon Springs and Kalymnos. My goals are to connect with millennials and younger to redefine the goals of the Sister Cities program and establish resources to help each other regularly. There is much more to the Sister Cities program than exchanging papers and having twinning ceremonies. My dream is to have Kalymnians living in Kalymnos know Tarpon Springs is here for them to help but also bring opportunities to Kalymnians for a better life.”
