The Mayor of Kalymnos, Giannis Mastrokoukos, welcomed Metropolitan Meletios of Carthage during his visit to the island. Discussions focused on the historical presence of Kalymnian sponge divers in Djerba and Sfax, Tunisia, where they built churches and left a lasting legacy.
Special mention was made of the Metropolitan’s role in returning to Kalymnos the crosses from the graves of five sponge divers. An agreement was reached to initiate a twinning partnership between the two cities and to support the creation of a Historical Museum dedicated to the lives and work of sponge divers in Tunisia.
The Municipality remains committed to promoting the island’s cultural heritage.
