By 2030, the construction of 4,000 housing units is planned for military personnel in island and border regions of Greece. 10-15% of these units will also be allocated to doctors and teachers. Funding will come from the Public Investment Program and part of the ReARM and SAFE defense programs.
The first houses are expected to be delivered in 2026. MP Manos Konsolas raised the issue in Parliament and proposed measures including:
- island-specific housing studies,
- assessment of student housing needs,
- tax incentives for property owners,
- renovation of old buildings/hotels for residential use,
- building student dormitories,
- use of public/municipal properties for housing,
- provision of interest-free loans or housing subsidies to support families living on small Aegean islands.
The aim is to support state officials, military personnel, health workers, students, and security forces living in regions with a housing shortage.
