Recovery and Coastal Protection Projects Remain Pending
KASOS, Greece – Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas has called for an extension of the emergency status declared for the Municipality of the Heroic Island of Kasos, arguing that critical recovery and protection projects have yet to begin despite the severe damage caused by extreme weather earlier this year.
In a parliamentary intervention addressed to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Konsolas stressed that the island is still dealing with the consequences of the intense weather events that struck on February 18 and 19, causing significant damage and highlighting the urgent need for coastal erosion control and public safety measures.
Although Kasos was placed under a three-month state of emergency following the disaster, the emergency period has now expired while key restoration and prevention projects remain pending.
According to the Dodecanese lawmaker, projects proposed by the Municipality of Kasos have not yet been included in the Ministry of Interior’s special funding programme, making an extension of the emergency declaration necessary.
Konsolas is requesting a further six-month extension to allow the completion of funding procedures and the implementation of essential coastal protection and flood-prevention infrastructure.
The case of Kasos highlights the growing challenges faced by small island communities across Greece as they confront increasingly frequent and severe climate-related events and the urgent need for resilient infrastructure.
