A fire that broke out on April 15th,2026, at a waste disposal site in Kalymnos has sparked strong political reactions, with the “NEA KALYMNOS” faction sharply criticizing the municipal authority.
In its statement, the faction refers to “serious risks to public health,” arguing that the incident highlighted ongoing issues in waste management on the island. It also accuses the administration of Mayor Giannis Mastrokoukos of failing to effectively address basic operational challenges, stressing the need for immediate and concrete action.
“NEA KALYMNOS” notes that it had previously raised concerns in an earlier statement (dated August 22, 2024), in which it proposed specific solutions. The faction emphasizes the urgency of proper waste management, especially in cases such as spontaneous combustion.
Waste management has long been a challenge for Kalymnos, and the recent incident brings renewed attention to the need for comprehensive planning and improved infrastructure.
So far, there has been no official response from the municipal authority regarding these claims.
