“The closure of the Ialysos post office means the withdrawal of the state from citizens and the regions”

The decision to suspend the operation of the Ialysos Post Office as of next Monday revives a plan we believed had been abandoned following widespread interventions and the unanimous opposition of the local community.
Ialysos is one of Rhodes’ largest residential and tourism centres. It serves thousands of residents and businesses and is situated in an area of particularly intense economic and tourism activity.
In practice, the decision by the Hellenic Post (ELTA) management represents yet another step towards the gradual withdrawal of the state and public services from Greece’s regions and from the daily lives of residents of the islands and remote areas.
At the same time, it disregards the fact that Hellenic Post does not merely engage in commercial activity but, first and foremost, provides services of vital social importance. Its presence in island communities is directly linked to the State’s obligation to ensure equal access to essential services for all citizens.
We call for the immediate reversal of the decision to close the Ialysos Post Office and for a substantive review of ELTA’s overall plans for our islands, based on specific and clearly defined criteria that take their insular character into account.
