Restoration and Enhancement Study Approved
An important step towards safeguarding and promoting Kalymnos’ cultural heritage has been taken with the approval of the restoration and enhancement study for the historic Vouvallis Mansion in Pothia.
According to an announcement by the South Aegean Region and the Kalymnos Regional Administration, Greece’s Ministry of Culture has approved the study, paving the way for the protection and future restoration of one of the island’s most distinctive mansions.
The proposed intervention has been included in the South Aegean Regional Development Programme 2021–2025. Specialised conservation studies have also been approved for the building’s interior and exterior decorative features.
Particular attention will be given to the mansion’s valuable architectural details, including metalwork, stonework, ceramics and decorative cement elements, all of which contribute to its unique character.
The Vouvallis Mansion is officially designated as a listed historic monument and is located within the traditional settlement of Pothia. It is a distinctive example of Kalymnos’ architectural and social history, preserving important artworks, furniture and objects from an earlier era.
Although the approval of the studies does not yet mark the beginning of construction work, it represents an essential step towards moving the restoration project forward and preserving a valuable part of the island’s historic identity.
By respecting its past while investing in its future, Kalymnos has the opportunity to restore the Vouvallis Mansion as an important landmark of culture and collective memory.
