Nikitiadis’ pressure in Parliament prompts inspections by the Ministry of Shipping over seafarers’ labor issues
The immediate launch of inspections following a Parliamentary Report submitted by Dodecanese MP for PASOK and former Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, Giorgos Nikitiadis, regarding serious labor issues on the vessel STAVROS of Saos Ferries, has been confirmed in a response by the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy.
This development follows the Parliamentary Report by Mr. Nikitiadis, who had stressed that no tolerance should be shown towards violations of seafarers’ fundamental rights.
As Minister Vassilis Kikilias states in his reply, the Maritime Labor Directorate instructed the Port Authority of Rhodes to carry out thorough inspections regarding compliance with maritime labor laws and the Collective Labor Agreement. The Ministry is currently awaiting the findings of these inspections.
For his part, Mr. Nikitiadis noted that he hopes for a swift conclusion of the inspections and the disclosure of the findings, aiming to protect the labor rights of seafarers.
