The statement by Sokratis Famellos, President of SYRIZA-PS, during his visit to the Region of Thessaly:
Serious concern over the government’s inadequacy regarding sheep and goat pox
“Our visit today to Thessaly and the prefecture of Larissa focuses exclusively on the major outbreak and spread of sheep and goat pox.
There is a well-founded concern about the viability of livestock farming across Greece, due to the rapid spread of this disease, which highlights the state’s and the government’s failure to effectively address such a serious issue.
Our demand, above all, is that there should be no setback in livestock operations. Therefore, the state must accelerate the severe delays in compensations.
There must be an organized plan, which obviously cannot be a ten-day quick fix, but requires a serious intervention based on science.
This cannot happen without veterinarians and without strong support for biosecurity and all the tools livestock farmers need. And clearly, measures must be taken now to ensure that Greece’s livestock sector is not called into question.
We are deeply concerned about the inadequacy the government has shown so far. We don’t want everything being announced to serve a communications strategy.
Without strong support, doubling the number of veterinarians, and financial assistance to farmers, such a plan cannot be implemented.
We will be briefed by the Region and the Veterinary Service, we will meet with livestock farmers, and at the press conference, I will present a comprehensive plan that SYRIZA-PS has, based both on science and on the needs of the country.”
