The New Democracy government has declared open war on the primary sector and on the people who sustain rural Greece. Through policy choices that serve cartels, large agri-businesses and middlemen, it is deliberately pushing small and medium-sized farmers and livestock breeders toward economic suffocation and extinction.
Farmers are once again taking to the streets because the Mitsotakis government:
• leaves them to pay exorbitant prices for electricity and fuel,
• forces them to produce under unbearable costs,
• compels them to sell at humiliating prices, and
• at the same time allows a few to profit “from the field to the shelf.”
After weeks of mobilizations, the government responds with mockery, communication tactics and token measures, proving that it lacks both the will and a coherent strategy to support the primary sector.
The implementation of the current Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is proceeding without planning, without social oversight and with complete disregard for the sustainability of agricultural production. Meanwhile, the EU–Mercosur agreement opens the door to mass imports of low-cost agricultural products of questionable standards, to the detriment of Greek production. As for the CAP after 2027, as currently being shaped in Brussels, it risks becoming the swan song of the primary sector.
The truth is simple and relentless:
New Democracy wants a primary sector without farmers.
It seeks concentration of land and production in a few hands, abandonment of the countryside and full dependence on imports.
SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance stands unequivocally with the mobilized farmers and livestock breeders and will actively participate in the major rally on February 13 in Athens, as a continuation and escalation of this just struggle.
We demand:
• immediate and substantial reduction of production costs,
• affordable agricultural fuel and energy,
• minimum guaranteed prices for agricultural products,
• crackdown on profiteering and cartels,
• fair compensation and real protection against the climate crisis,
• increased CAP funding after 2027 and prevention of its renationalization.
We call on SYRIZA–PS members and supporters, as well as every citizen who refuses to see the countryside deserted, to take part in the rally on February 13 at Syntagma Square.
Without farmers and livestock breeders, there is no food.
Without a primary sector, there is no future.
Their struggle is our struggle.
