Questions Raised Over ANEK’s €500,000 Funding
The municipal opposition group “Kalymnos Power and Prospect” has called for greater transparency regarding the use of €500,000 provided by the Municipality of Kalymnos to ANEK, the island’s municipal shipping company, for the completion of a new vessel.
In a formal letter addressed to Deputy Mayor for Financial and Administrative Affairs Ioannis Theofilidis, the group’s leader, Dimitris Diakomichalis, argues that previous requests for information have not received satisfactory answers regarding how the funds were allocated and utilized.
According to the letter, the Municipality, which reportedly holds an 80 percent stake in ANEK, should have complete knowledge of how the money was spent, particularly since the funding was granted for a specific purpose and ultimately concerns public resources.
The opposition also highlights that fourteen months after the funding was granted, the vessel project has not yet been completed, raising concerns about the progress of the investment and prompting renewed calls for detailed financial information.
The statement concludes with an appeal for full disclosure by both the municipal administration and ANEK’s management, stressing that transparency and accountability are essential for maintaining public trust and ensuring responsible management of public funds.
