At the Center of Public Outrage: The Sealing of the Historic “Olympic” Hotel in Kalymnos
The recent sealing of the historic “Olympic” hotel in Kalymnos by the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) has sparked intense reactions, with a GNTO employee from the Rhodes office allegedly playing a key role in the operation. The process unfolded in the presence of police and judicial authorities, resulting in the forced removal of 12 residents—among them tourists—just weeks before the peak of the summer season.
This action has raised serious questions and unrest within the local community, particularly due to disturbing scenes of guests’ personal belongings being thrown into the street and later transferred to the Kalymnos Police Department.
According to reports, the official reason for the sealing was the absence of a fire safety certificate and a legally appointed Board of Directors. However, the hotel’s owner firmly denies these allegations, insisting that all safety protocols are in place and that the establishment is fully compliant with the law.
The GNTO employee’s persistent demand for the hotel’s closure, even while it was occupied, has also raised eyebrows. The emergence of prospective buyers shortly after the sealing has fueled suspicions of hidden motives and possible personal interests. According to an investigation by Kalymnos Times, these interested parties reportedly include both foreign nationals and local investors. Rumors have also surfaced linking the presence of Turkish businessman Acun Ilıcalı on the island to a possible interest in purchasing the Olympic hotel.
This incident has brought to light broader concerns regarding transparency and governance within the GNTO. The local community now demands clear answers: What procedure was followed? Who made the decision to seal the hotel? And on what grounds?
The impact on the island’s tourism image is already visible, with many local professionals expressing concerns about the negative message Kalymnos may be sending to international visitors at the height of the holiday season.

After speaking with Angelos Olympitis, representative of 50% of the Olympic Hotel S.A., he shared the hotel’s fire safety certificate with us. This document contradicts the claims regarding the property’s alleged risk or lack of compliance.
He noted that the remaining 50% of the company belongs to his first cousins residing in London.
