Green light for the restoration of the historic former Gendarmerie building in Chora, Kalymnos
The restoration of the historic former Gendarmerie building in Chora, Kalymnos, has officially received the green light, marking a significant step toward the revival of a landmark from the Italian occupation period with notable historical and architectural value, which had been abandoned for decades.
Following close cooperation between the Municipality of Kalymnos and the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), the project is now moving into the implementation phase. TEE will undertake the full restoration and redevelopment of the building, aiming to return it as a functional and vibrant hub for the local community.
This development reflects a strategic choice by Mayor Giannis Mastrokoukos and the municipal administration to strengthen collaboration with institutional and scientific bodies for the benefit of local development and heritage preservation.
Key contributions came from TEE leadership, including President Giorgos Stasinos, Secretary General Antonis Giannikouris, President of TEE Dodecanese Mary Papandreou, Chairman of the Kalymnos Committee Sakis Tsikouris, and former President Iakovos Gryllis.
Once restored, the building is expected to host technical, scientific, educational, and cultural activities, becoming a focal point for local growth.
In his statement, the Mayor noted:
“A building that stood abandoned for decades is gaining new life and purpose. This is another important step toward a Kalymnos that respects its history and invests in its future.”
