Restoration and conservation works are underway at the Metropolitan Church of the Transfiguration of Christ the Savior in Kalymnos, focusing on the marble elements of the iconostasis, the pulpit, and the bishop’s throne.
The project is being carried out under the supervision of the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Dodecanese and aims to preserve and highlight important ecclesiastical and artistic features of the church, which form part of the region’s cultural and religious heritage.
This intervention follows earlier works that included insulation, maintenance, and repainting of the church’s exterior, as part of broader efforts to protect and promote the monument.
According to relevant authorities, the project reflects cooperation between the South Aegean Region – Kalymnos Regional Unit, the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Dodecanese, and the Holy Metropolis of Leros, Kalymnos, and Astypalaia.
The restoration of the Metropolitan Church is considered essential for preserving the historical and cultural identity of Kalymnos, as the monument serves both as a place of worship and as a significant example of ecclesiastical art.
