Growing Public Participation and Calls for Extended Accessibility
Reverse recycling has become an integral part of everyday life in Kalymnos, with an increasing number of residents and visitors using the recycling center at the island’s port to recycle plastic, aluminum, and glass packaging.
The initiative, implemented by the Municipality of Kalymnos, is proving highly successful, encouraging environmental awareness while promoting the principles of the circular economy through a reward-based recycling system.
Public participation is expected to grow even further in the coming weeks, as a second Reverse Recycling Center is scheduled to begin operating at the municipal stadium, making the service more accessible to residents across the island.
Despite the positive response, many local employees have expressed concerns that the current operating hours (10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) overlap with their working schedules, preventing them from using the facility.
They propose that the center instead operate from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., allowing working citizens to recycle their packaging before or immediately after work. Such a change would likely increase participation and make the program more accessible to a larger number of residents.
Citizens who choose not to redeem the monetary value of their recycling voucher also have the option of donating it to Mission (Apostoli), one of Greece’s largest non-governmental charitable organizations. Founded in July 2010 on the initiative of His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens and All Greece, the Mission carries out extensive humanitarian and social welfare programs, providing assistance to vulnerable groups throughout the country.
Kalymnos’ reverse recycling initiative demonstrates that when modern infrastructure is combined with active public participation, environmental protection can go hand in hand with social solidarity, creating tangible benefits for both the community and the environment.
