South Aegean Targets Global Gastronomy Recognition with 2028 World Title Bid
The South Aegean Region has officially submitted its candidacy for the title of World Region of Gastronomy 2028, Regional Governor Giorgos Hatzimarkos announced through a social media post.
According to Hatzimarkos, the bid builds on a long-term strategy that began with the “Aegean Cuisine” initiative launched by the Dodecanese Chamber of Commerce and later embraced by the Cyclades Chamber. He also recalled that the South Aegean was named European Region of Gastronomy 2019, highlighting the international recognition of the islands’ culinary heritage.
In his statement, the regional governor emphasized that the South Aegean’s rich agricultural and maritime production—including wines, olive oil, cheeses, honey, herbs, seafood, and local specialties—reflects the region’s culture, history, and identity. He also praised the contribution of farmers, fishermen, producers, chefs, and hospitality professionals who preserve and promote this gastronomic tradition.
Hatzimarkos noted that earning the global distinction would strengthen the international profile of the islands, enhance the value of local products, support tourism and entrepreneurship, and create new opportunities for future generations.
The campaign is built around the central message: “South Aegean — From Ancient Pride to Future Heritage,” highlighting the region’s commitment to safeguarding its culinary traditions while shaping a sustainable future.
