The Municipality of Kalymnos has secured funding of €255,931.80 for the implementation of a shared electric bicycle system, as part of the action “Sustainable Micromobility through Shared Bicycle Systems in Greek Municipalities (Phase B)”, under the Environment and Climate Change Programme 2021–2027.
This initiative reflects the consistent policy of Mayor Giannis Mastrokoukos’ Municipal Authority to invest in projects that promote environmental protection, sustainable mobility, and improved daily life for residents and visitors.
The project aims to reduce short-distance car use, lower the environmental footprint, and support a more functional and sustainable island. A network of shared electric bicycles will be installed at selected locations across Kalymnos. Users will be able to pick up a bike from a station, use it for their trips, and return it to designated docking points.
The system will include:
- shared electric city bikes,
- charging and locking stations,
- digital applications (mobile and desktop) for access and information,
- a modern management platform,
- and all necessary supporting infrastructure.
Use of the bicycles will be free of charge for a specific period, according to the Operating Regulation that will define terms of use and ensure proper operation.
The project contributes to the implementation of Greece’s National Energy and Climate Plan, promotes cycling culture, and supports the transition to cleaner, low-emission mobility solutions. The Municipal Authority emphasizes that it will continue to utilize available funding tools to implement projects that protect the environment and enhance quality of life, reaffirming that safeguarding Kalymnos’ natural wealth remains a long-term priority.
