Support for Island Sports Clubs – Parliamentary Intervention by Manos Konsolas to Amend Article 91
With a parliamentary intervention addressed to the Deputy Minister of Sports, Mr. Giannis Vroutsis, the Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas raised the issue of amending Article 91 of the draft sports law, which prohibits sports clubs from entering into paid contracts with members of their Boards of Directors or their relatives.
Mr. Konsolas emphasized that this provision does not reflect the reality of island communities, where small populations and close family ties often result in overlapping roles, such as that of coach and board member within the same club.
He proposed a legislative exemption for island-based amateur sports clubs, allowing them to pay up to €3,000 annually for coaching services, even if the coach is a board member or a relative of the club. Without such an exemption, essential contributors to local sports may be excluded and marginalized.
He also reminded that the government has already introduced similar exceptions for local government officials, who can legally transact with municipalities and regions where they are elected, up to €5,000 per year.
